The word Orang-utan is Malaysian and translates to “man of the forest”. Orangutans live in Indonesia and Malaysia these are the only places where they live in the wild. There are two species, or types of orang-utan, the Bornean orang-utan which is found on the island of Borneo and the Sumatran which is found on the island of Sumatra.
The orang-utan is a great ape along with gorillas, chimpanzees, and Bonobos,. The great apes have large brains, forward facing eyes, opposable thumbs. Humans are also great apes; in fact we share 96.4% of our genetic makeup with orang-utans.
Orangutans sleep in nests in trees which they make every day from leaves and branches. Orangutans are arboreal, which means they spend nearly all their time in trees and hardly ever come to the ground. This makes them different to other apes like chimpanzees and gorillas and humans, who spend a lot of time on the ground.
Orangutans have been known to make different tools to make life easier, Such as hooks to help them built their nest. Orangutans have been known to place multiple leaves over thorns when they are feeding, and make umbrellas out of large leaves.
Seventy five years ago, there were three hundred and fifteen thousand orang-utans living in the wild, today there are only eighteen thousand orang-utans left in the wild, thirteen thousand Bornean orang-utans, and five thousand Sumatran orang-utans. This is due to habitat loss. Orang-utans are being forced out of their homes so the forest can be destroyed and palm plantations can take their place. In Indonesia an area of forest the size of six football fields are cut down every five minutes! The orang-utans are normally shot when they return to their homes, which would be the palm oil and fruit farms because the farmers see them as a pest. If the orang-utan has a baby with it, it will be taken and illegally sold as a pet.
