Why Do I Have A Hard Time Meeting People!?

By admin Posted in: windows phone

Before you skip on and answer, please take this time to read what I have to say because my problem makes me upset in a way:
This is making me so frustrated, when I went to my very first freshmen orientation in College 2 yrs ago and I felt so intimidated to meet and greet people. I’m literally sitting down and watching these other people shake hands and introduce themselves who are only sitting like a few inches away from me and I do nothing but pretend to look away. Then in the end of the day, I felt pretty bad of not saying/introducing myself because I felt so intimidated to do so.
Now I transferred to another College and went to the new student orientation today. Again I was a little nervous and intimidated. I was in the bus with other new students and again someone next to me is introducing herself to another guy sitting across from her, and I’m looking away out of the window because I’m too timid. However I do know that if I look at her, there would be introductions between herself and I. Then when I went to the auditorium sitting down and waiting for the program to start, again someone a few seats away from is introducing themselves to other people and I’m constantly looking at my phone pretending to not hear anything because once again I felt so intimidated meeting people. Finally someone introduced me to himself (of course I didn’t start it) we chatted for a seconds and then stopped because I had nothing else to say which really frustrated me by the way. Again, in the end of the day I felt horrible not saying much to the guy and not introducing myself to other people because I felt so timid…
Now this all seems pretty ironic because I work for customer service and literally always face to face helping them without being intimidated. I don’t know why meeting people around my age is much harder than working at customer service and working with customers who are mostly around their late 20′s+
It seems I still have this wall to break, and it really frustrates me.

When you do customer service you are probably on the other side of the counter, the counter protects you from your customer, so while you are probably face to face, you are still safely behind the counter. Well you know that you have to look at a person and say hello, and then talk to them, you know the solution, so you just have to practice it. Maybe you can practice with someone at home, or a friend, and just practice looking them in the eye, shaking their hand and having some chit chat. Maybe you will have to practice while looking in the mirror. We all fear rejection, we all fear saying something stupid, if you do say something wrong, shake it off and keep moving forward. Watch tv or movies and see how the characters interact with each other. Watch how your family, church members, people around town interact with each other. Practice, it is all about practice. Practice with family or friends, like if you went to a dance and asked someone to dance, practice what would happen if they said yes, practice what would happen if they said no. We all fear rejection, we all are afraid of saying something stupid, but if that happens, just laugh it off and move on. Everyone who reads aloud in church goofs a word, even the Pastor, we all know how that feels, but you laugh and keep moving forward. It is like the quote….”Be who you are and say what you feel ‘cause people who mind don’t matter, and people who matter don’t mind.” Dr. Seuss. Go to polls and surveys and answer questions so you get good at answering random questions. Write down questions that are fun and interesting to you. Y/A has an entertainment section with categories like jokes and riddles and polls and surveys. It is always good to have a good joke, so copy them down so you don’t forget the punch line. Polls and surveys has a lot of good questions and they change all the time, so it is a good source for questions to ask when the conversations stall.
